New Years is here, and I for one am slightly terrified by how quickly this year has flashed by. When I was younger, it seemed that the years went by slowly, a never ending stream of lessons, homework and exams. But now, it seems like I blink and three months has gone. I discovered a new wrinkle on my forehead the other day which was utterly depressing. I try to convince myself I still look like a youthful 21 year old, but in reality I’m rapidly turning into the crypt keeper. I totally blame my children for this decline in my appearance - they are youthsucking vampires, albeit very cute ones. Anyway let’s move off the topic of my waning youthfulness and talk about more cheerful things.
Did anyone have any luck keeping their 2019 New Year's resolutions? Mine was to eat healthier and try and take a moment each day to appreciate something to help increase my feeling of wellbeing. On the whole I think I have achieved this. Maybe not the eating healthy one as I have definitely slipped up on that multiple times, but my mood is much better. I had a real low moment at the end of 2018. I ended up needing to take 48 hours away from my family because I just felt completely lost. This is something I am sure most stay at home moms feel at one point or another. I just felt like I had lost all identity, and with that, any feeling of self worth. I ended up going back to my parents house in London for a breather, and it was a game changer. It gave me the opportunity to breath, restablaise myself, and the distance from my family made me realise just how much I need them. While away I had a long chat with my Aunt who I am very close with, and she was the one who suggested I take a moment each day to focus on something I appreciate at that exact moment. It can be anything from the fact the laundry is all put away when I didn’t realise it was, that the sun was just the right temperature on my daily dog walk, to enjoying a bath with a good book and my children stay asleep. That in the exact moment something good happens, to acknowledge it and think ‘at this moment, regardless of everything else, I am happy’. The feeling might only last a second, but it has done wonders for my mental health. If you don’t take anything else away with you after reading this, take this idea and give it a try. I promise you won't regret it.
